There are several groups of self identified “conservatives” and liberty minded people pushing for amending the constitution via an Article V convention. A balanced budget amendment is the “last great hope” for America, they say. Many well meaning people have been recruited to persuade their state legislatures into filing applications to call for a constitutional convention. Little do most of them realize what a dangerous threat to our liberty such a convention will pose.
A Naive Idea
It is true that out of control spending, and an ever growing national debt, are very serious problems that left unchecked will destroy whats left of our republic. The problem, at it’s core, is that politicians refuse to obey the limits of the constitution and the people keep electing them. Almost every penny that congress spends is not authorized by the constitution we currently have. What on earth makes anyone believe that these same people would obey another? It is already illegal to spend the gross amounts of money congress spends. It is ridiculous to assume that a new amendment would suddenly cause these politicians to become obedient to a document that they ignore! If you want a balanced budget, the logical thing to do would be to elect honest congressmen who were true constitutionalists.
A Dangerous Idea
There is a very real danger that calling an Article V convention might lead to entirely new constitution. Proponents say that there is no danger in it becoming a “runaway convention”, but all they offer is a cheap promise with nothing to back it up. In fact there is a precedent for a runaway convention, that being the constitutional convention of 1787. This convention was called to propose and vote on amendments to the Articles of Confederation but instead drew up an entirely new system of government. At the time, men such as James Madison and his contemporaries were our elder statesmen. In 2016, we have something else altogether. Do you want to risk having the current governing class writing us a new constitution? Do you want to risk having the 2nd amendment removed or the 4th? But the people driving this convention are conservatives, you might say. They wouldn’t let that happen! And here again, the plot thickens…
The broader Article V movement is not limited to conservatives wanting to balance the budget. There are several left wing groups seeking to call a con-con as well. Interestingly enough they work together with the conservative groups in an organization called “Call a Convention” which was founded by Lawrence Lessig, an advisor on Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign and a Bilderberg attendee. In this group you find the “conservative” groups like Mark Meckler and Michael Farris’ Convention of States (COS), Article V Caucus (of state legislators), American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), Balanced Budget Amendment Task Force, and Compact for America working with left wing socialist groups to help call a convention. To add to the intrigue, many of the leftist groups calling for a convention are funded by George Soros.
What Is The Endgame?
An Article V convention opens the door wide open for the collectivists to scrap and rewrite our constitution. Once a convention is called, the sky is limit for the enemies of liberty. Many people don’t realize it but the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA has even drawn up a “Constitution for The New Socialist Republic in North America”. You can download a copy At This Link. Is this what the strange bipartisan coalition of Article V supporters has in store for us? I can’t say for sure, but I am convinced that I smell a rat.
